David Raphael Mercado arrived from Recife, and was granted letters patent for his design of a wind powered sugar mill. His tombstone cost £50 in 1686. For the past 150 years, it has been buried, and the coralstone balls and supporting feet have been hidden from view.
Family members are buried on either side of his grave.
